You have probably been through the challenging experience of sorting, discarding, packing, and moving your household. If not, let me assure you it is not something to look forward to.

As we prepare to market our home and move to Lakeland, we are sorting through closets, boxes and drawers we have not opened for years. We have discovered junk we wonder why we still have, and a few treasured items that bring us tears and/or joy. Some items have been destroyed by mildew, rust, and breakage.

The lost items that we’re sad about are the ones attached to the people in our lives. Some old pictures of my dad and I that moisture destroyed, brought me to tears as I thought about the things we did together and the things we had planned to do and didn’t.

Matthew 6:19 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” Stuff is only temporary, but people are destined for eternity. I am determined to spend my life and resources on helping other people get to heaven. As I take another load of formerly valuable things to the dump, I’m convinced I’m on the right track.

I will be in Lakeland this Sunday exploring what it means to be a church like Jesus. I hope we will worship together in person or by livestream.
